I created this shirt to remind myself and my Black Queens + Kings that we are human beings. More often than not, society treats us as though we are not. Dating back to slavery Black people were auctioned off as chattel, beaten like animals, and mentally traumatized causing generation after generation to forget who we are and where we are descended from. Although there has been great strides made from 400 years ago, the police brutality that takes place in the Black community present day is yet another tragedy that implies we are not viewed simply as human beings. For me, wearing this shirt is a gentle reminder that I am human; I make mistakes, I’m allowed to feel and express my emotions, I’m allowed to give myself permission to take a mental health day, and I was born to live out my purpose. Being Black is just the icing on the cake.
